Welcome to the website of the 17th MGC PhD Student Workshop.

This website provides you with information about the 17th MGC PhD Student Workshop. There is information about the purpose of the workshop, the date, the wonderful location (youth hostel and the city itself), the organizing committee, the keynote speakers & the program including information about the social activity and other practical info (or links) you might like to view as well. This website also gives you the opportunity to subscribe for this great workshop!

The MGC PhD Student Workshop is organised in collaboration with the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. The workshop is supported by the Cancer Genomics Centre. The contributions of the MGC and the external supporters will cover most of the costs for the workshop, although we will ask for a small contribution      (20 euro) of each participant.

Why this workshop?

The MGC PhD Student Workshop is organized already for many years and there are at least 5 reasons why this meeting is interesting.

Networking Practicing and learning Exchange knowledge Part of the PhD  program Broaden your knowledge

This meeting gives you as a PhD student the chance to show your data in a relaxed environment to fellow PhD students and have discussions about your work and experiences as a PhD student in an informal way. With presentations, poster sessions, a social event and free time we hopefully provide the right atmosphere for this.

We also invited several keynote speakers which will give their opinion about research in general (either in a company or at an university) and which choices they had to made during their career. This gives you the chance to think about your future and which decisions you will have to make during your career.

For who?

The MGC PhD Student Workshop is organized, as the name already implies, for all PhD students and it is expected that you will join the workshop at least a couple of times. First year PhD students are requested to hand in an abstract about their project. When you are a second year PhD student you are asked to hand in an abstract and prepare a poster which you can show and discuss during the poster sessions. Third year students should hand in an abstract and give an oral presentation about their work. If you joining the workshop for the fourth time, you are free to either give a presentation or present a poster.

When and where?

The location for this year's workshop is Cologne. We will stay in the youth hostel of this city and will use their conference rooms for the meeting itself. The workshop will be from 22-25 June 2010. More information on Cologne can be found on this site.

Did you become enthusiastic and are interested in joining the workshop? Just subscribe and we hope to see you all in Cologne!

If there are questions or remarks you can always contact the committee.
